Dimensions: 29cmx42.6cm; 7cm height

Notes: Throughout, quotations used by the authors of the selected documents are rendered in italics with a source note printed in the margin.

The watermark is the coat of arms of Cardinal Richelieu: A Cardinal’s hat over a crown and a shield with three chevrons, with tassels falling to three knots on each side.

Greek and Latin columns switch on recto and verso sides to keep Greek text in the more authoritative central position. (see p. 11-13)

Column positions on two pages

The typeface used for the Greek is grecs du roi. This typeface was created by Claude Garamond in 1541 and was based on the hand of Angelo Vergecio (d.1569), royal scribe for Francis I. The same typeface was not employed for Greek in the margins of the Latin text (see p. 546)
